  1. With hot water, slowly and carefully pat the anal area with a soft cloth and warm water. Do not scrub and do not use soap! It is also wise to take a hot bath twice a day to reduce irritation and help the anus to relax.
  2. Place a plastic bag with ice cubes against the hemorrhoid to reduce swelling. This helps shrink the hemorrhoids in an anti-inflammatory fashion.
  3. Chewing on a chestnut a few times a day may also make hemorrhoids symptoms go away.
  4. Eating prunes, fresh or dried creates a natural laxative effect which will help keep the stool adequately soft
  5. Use Witch Hazel, an ingredient common in many hemorrhoids supplements as it reduces the irritation
  6. Apply Hydrocortisone ointment on your hemorrhoids 2 to 3 times a day to reduce irritation and burning. This ointment may even reduce the discomfort immediately. But do bear in mind that the ointment thins the skin and thus new symptoms may occur
  7. High fiber food. Maximizing fiber-rich food intake will lead to softer stool and reduced pressure on the anal area.  Increasing the amount of fiber intake by 20 to 35 grams per day is sufficient. Good sources of fiber are fruit (mainly apples), vegetables and whole grains. Make sure you eat whole wheat bread instead of white bread. Finally, an apple a day does keep the doctor away, green apples have lots of fibre in them.
  8. Fiber Supplements. Natural extra fiber supplements may be taken. You also need to drink enough fluids because fiber supplements can cause congestion (constipation) and need lots of fluid to be absorbed into the body. Start with flaxseed otherwise known as linseed.
  9. Drink plenty of water. Drink at least 8 to 10 glasses a day as this promotes bowel movement!
  10. Do not force the stool out, as this exerts unnecessary pressure on the swelling and may even lead to recurring hemorrhoids.
  11. When nature calls, oblige immediately!
  12. Sports: get active to reduce pressure on the anal veins.
  13. Avoid long periods of sitting or standing. Make sure you walk at least 5 minutes every hour and try to consciously change position and posture.
  14. Always exhale when lifting stuff, holding your breath in can increase pressure in the anal area
  15. Avoid drinking fizzy drinks as they can irritate the anus, causing itching and dermatitis.

  • Hemorrhoids are not immediately dangerous or life threatening, but you can still be heavily inconvenience
  • A healthy lifestyle can quickly relieve symptoms and prevent re-occurrence of hemorrhoids
  • If the complications or pain continue, consult a doctor
  • Eat fiber-rich foods
  • Do not abuse laxatives
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Make sure there is minimal pressure on the anus as much as possible!
